Grows very slowly and compact. It makes lovely shaped columns (hence the name of the plant) that feel velvety soft.
Actually the columns are very densely packed leaves. On this way the plant has less leaf surface and therefore less evaporation.
Quite smart for the extremely dry circumstances where these plants grow.
The sun can cause a red-brown glow on the columns, as shown on the pictures, specially when you water sparingly.
The columns can get twice as wide after a good watering. Three good waterings per year is actually enough.
